Supporting young and passionate winegrowers

The story of the “Jeunes Pousses” comes from a long-lasting friendship between Thibault Liger-Belair and Ivan Massonnat. Thibault’s idea was to provide an entire estate to young winegrowers for 3 years and give them the opportunity to learn how to manage a vineyard before they settle on their own. In 2015, Ivan (owner of the Belargus estate in Anjou) became fond of this philanthropic initiative. Together, they decided to start this “Young Shoots” adventure, bought vines and a house to become the wine cellar.

Thibault

Thibault : “I was lucky, when I started my career in the wine business twenty years ago, to get beautiful vines and to create my own vineyard, thanks to a family inheritance.

And each year, during harvest, I meet young future winegrowers that are full of ambition and passion, like I was at their age.

So, I asked myself; how could we give the same opportunity to young winegrower to express their potential in an estate, like I had when I started?”

The idea of the “Jeunes Pousses” estate was born.

The goal is to provide young winegrowers a vineyard in organic and biodynamic farming for 3 years. After 3 years of managing this estate, the “Young shoots” will be able to create their own vineyard. With their experience, and the help of the people that supported them during these years of apprenticeship, they will be able to acquire or rent vines and start on their own estate.

Growing vine in organic and biodynamic farming

The estate of “Jeunes Pousses” is composed of 5.2 ha of vine. Most plots are based around the village of Émeringes and one is in neighboring Chénas.

The wine cellar is based in Émeringes at a spot called “Les Rayauds”. In today’s changing climate, it is a real strength to have the vines and the cellar nearby and be at the vineyard every day.

Previously, the vines were grown in organic and biodynamic farming by Thibault Liger-Belair and the “Pierres roses” estate’s team. The vines obtained their organic label in 2018.

The “Jeunes Pousses” continue this legacy, producing wines which will be certified organic.

Producing regional wines

Our objective is to reveal the different terroirs or lands that we have in each of our plots at Émeringes and Chénas, according to the Burgundy “climates” model.

Chénas: 0.46 ha site on shallow granitic soils called “Les Brureaux” in Deschamps village, located North-East of the appellation Chénas. From this plot you can see the designation of Juliénas, Saint Amour and a panorama of the Mont Blanc mountain range.

La Croix: 0.73 ha plot of 40-year-old vine at Émeringes, which is south-facing and planted on shallow rocky and sandy soils, facing the steep hills of Juliénas at the tip of the plateau of “Vavre”.

Les Rayauds: Located at Émeringes in an area called “Replat de Vavre” and “aux Benons”. This cuvée will be a gathering of 4 plots that represent wine that can be produced on Émeringes’ terroirs, very rocky and with south exposition.

Les vieilles vignes: Particular care will be given to this 0.5 ha of hundred-year-old vines, which is exposed south on shallow rocky soils. Manual destemming will be done to keep only the best berries and its pedicle before long maceration.

In all cases, harvest will be done manually in small batches, to minimize crushing of the grapes before being put in tanks. A sorting table will help select the grapes coming from the vineyard.
