THE PROJECT


Organic certification of Château Magdeleine Bouhou

The purpose of this project is to complete the conversion of our estate to organic farming practices and gain organic certification. Specifically, the funding will be used to purchase equipment for the application of phytosanitary treatments. The conversion project itself is of a greater scale and touches upon the entire ecosystem of our home. We chose the organic path because we feel that in doing so we can better express our terroir. The organic certification is not an end in and of itself, yet it will help formalize the work we have been doing for the past several years. It is also a sign of our commitment to being even more respectful of the earth and environment.

Certain aspects of conversion have already begun

We have been preparing for this conversion for several years now with continuous investments in equipment and adaptations of our practices in the vineyard and in the cellar. Indeed, we must rethink our work on three main aspects: the work in the vineyard, the work in the cellar and the phytosanitary monitoring of the vine.

Winemaking and cellar work

In the winery we utilize low intervention practices with minimal sulphur additions which are already well within organic specifications.

Vine and plant management

We have a thoughtful pragmatic approach in dealing with vine and plant life in the vineyard. We mechanically work the soil without the use of chemicals. We also grow plants that live in harmony with the vines.

Phytosanitary protection of the plant

It is in this area where we must improve our habits to ensure organic certification. The main difference lies in the use of “contact only” preparations rather than so called penetrating products used in conventional farming. For the application of contact only phytosanitary preparations we must purchase a sprayer to ensure accurate coverage throughout our vineyard.

Our needs for the project

Initial objective: 20 000€

The funding will allow us to purchase a sprayer to apply contact only phytosanitary preparations in a highly efficient manner.

If our goal of 20000 € is surpassed, we will use the additional resources to continue to improve our farming practices. For example, a specific sprayer to apply clay based preparation for natural treatments will cost 3000€. Financing of a second tractor to aid in properly managing our organic estate : we need to be able to react swiftly to weather changes. Cost of a suitable tractor 37750€.
